Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
