Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
