Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
